青春とは人生のある期間ではなく、心の持ち方を言う。
たくましい意志、豊かな想像力、炎える情熱をさす。
青春とは、人生の深い泉の清新さを言う。
青春とは怯懦（きょうだ）を退ける勇気、安易を振り捨てる冒険心を意味する。
ときには、20歳の青年よりも60歳の人に青春がある。
歳を重ねただけでは人は老いない。
理想を失うとき初めて老いる。
歳月は皮膚にしわを増すが、情熱を失えば心はしぼむ。
苦悩、恐怖、失望により気力は地を這い、精神は芥になる。
60歳であろうと16歳であろうと人の胸には、驚異に魅かれる心、幼子のような未知への探求心、人生への興味の歓喜がある。
人から神から美･希望･喜悦･勇気･力の霊感を受ける限り君は若い。
霊感が絶え、精神が皮肉の雪におおわれ、悲嘆の氷にとざされるとき、20歳であろうと人は老いる。
頭を高く上げ希望の波を捉える限り80歳であろうと人は青春にして己む。
怯懦（きょうだ）＝ 臆病で気が弱いこと。いくじのないこと。
芥 ＝（あくた）＝ ごみ。くず。
己む ＝（やむ）＝ それまで続いていたことが，切れて続かなくなる。 「雨が−・む」 でも普通は「雨が止む」

YOUTH

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

青 春
青春とは人生の或る期間を言うのではなく心の様相を言うのだ
優れた創造力、逞しき意志、炎ゆる情熱、怯懦を却ける勇猛心
安易を振り捨てる冒険心、こう言う様相を青春と言うのだ
年を重ねただけで人は老いない。理想を失う時に初めて老いがくる
歳月は皮膚のしわを増すが情熱を失う時に精神はしぼむ
苦悶や、狐疑、不安、恐怖、失望、こう言うものこそ恰も長年月の
如く人を老いさせ、精気ある魂をも芥に帰せしめてしまう
年は六十であろうと十六であろうと、その胸中に抱き得るものは何か
曰く「驚異えの愛慕心」空にひらめく星晨、その輝きにも似たる
事物や思想の対する欽迎、事に處する剛毅な挑戦、小児の如く
求めて止まぬ探求心、人生への歓喜と興味。
人は信念と共に若く 疑惑と共に老ゆる
人は自信と共に若く 恐怖と共に老ゆる
希望ある限り若く 失望と共に老い朽ちる
大地より、神より、人より、美と喜悦、勇気と壮大そして
偉力と霊感を受ける限り、人の若さは失われない
これらの霊感が絶え、悲歎の白雪が人の心の奥までも蔽い
つくし、皮肉の厚氷がこれを固くとざすに至ればこの時にこそ
人は全くに老いて神の憐れみを乞う他はなくなる

ウルマンの原文は Whether sixty or sixteen, だが。訳原文は
年は七十であろうと十六であろうと、その胸中に抱き得るものは何か
と、なっている。誤訳と思われるが、深遠な配慮による訳なのだろうか。
